Frequently Asked Questions

Piercing Studio

  • How old do I need to be?

    No service for under 16s.

Our ear piercing services are available to clients age 16+ this includes jewellery fittings for healed piercings. If this is you, you must bring a photo ID and a parent or legal guardian with you to the appointment-they must also have a correlating photo ID of their own to confirm the relationship to you.

For all other piercing services clients must be 18+

If you meet the age requirements you are very welcome to make an appointment to visit us.

Everyone may be asked to provide proof with a form of valid photo I.D. If you do not meet the age requirements or you cannot provide ID when asked your service may be denied and no refund will be given as per our refunds policy.

  • What is your accessibility for wheelchair users or people with impaired mobility?

Although we do have a small 8cm step up to get into the main building, we are in the process of getting a ramp for anyone requiring it.

The door is 100cm wide however we can open the side panel for a total of 130 cm wide clearance if needed.

Once in the building our main entrance and treatment rooms are fully wheelchair accessible.

Our glass jewellery cabinets are 105cm tall in total, but viewable from a seated position with the panels starting at 82 cm from the floor level, of course we are on hand to bring items out for anyone wanting a close look at our jewellery.

The treatment bed is 80cm high with a small 17cm step up where required, and can accommodate for bodies weighing up to 364 lbs.

If you can stand for short periods of time to get onto the bed or would like to lay down for the procedure this is an option for you.

Unfortunately we are not able to assist with handling your body in any way as to get you on and off the bed so please bring an assistant to help with this if you choose the above options.

Please know we will happily adapt and complete the procedure with you seated in your chair but may need you to move your head and neck positioning for some piercing placements.

There should be no issues with placement and/or healing if you are a wheelchair user, although some lower body placements may be advised against. If you are unsure if your health or mobility issues will come with added healing risks please email us and we will help as best we can.

Unfortunately as our wc was pre-existing it does not have adequate turning space for wheelchairs, we apologise for this inconvenience.

  • What is your policy on inclusiveness?

We want to make sure all bodies feel safe and comfortable with visiting and try to leave nothing unanswered so have made this section to declare that we are a space welcome to all.

We have zero tolerance for any inappropriate behaviours in the studio, this includes any negative attitudes against any of our working team and/or our clients.

We ask all persons entering the studio to leave their judgments outside as this is a safe space for everyone to creatively express themselves aesthetically through fine body art.

We are LGBTQIA friendly and want you to know that we will respect any requested pronouns and preferred name.

In the instance that the name or gender/sex on your photo ID does not match your preferred name or your pronouns please do not worry. So long as the photo is a resemblance of you and the ID is in date this is acceptable to us for confirmation of your age.

If you have a heavier stature we want to assure you that we have treatment beds that can facilitate all bodies up to 165 kilos/26 stones/364 pounds.

We will not accept any form of abuse, if you display this you will be asked to leave and if you do not comply we will use our company alarm connected directly to the local authorities.

  • Are there any reasons why I might not be suitable for a piercing procedure?

Your medical health is crucial when it comes to receiving and healing any skin procedures which can leave you susceptible to infection.

For this reason, we have a confidential, detailed release form which you must complete before your procedure asking you for any information regarding medical conditions you have/treatments you have undergone or are currently receiving which may affect your ability to receive a piercing, or affect the ability of your body to heal the procedure.

MEDICAL CONDITIONS- In the instance where we are concerned that something on your release form may make you more vulnerable during the procedure or present extreme difficulty for your body to heal, we may defer your appointment until you can seek medical professional advice and provide us with confirmation from your local GP that there is no additional risk to us carrying out your procedure.

PREGNANCY- If you are pregnant we will not carry out any piercing procedures. Your body is undergoing hormonal changes and your immune system may not function as it would 'usually' due to the focus being on growing life. Healing wounds will not be your body's priority and IF you open your body to infection you open the risk of infection travelling to the unborn foetus which in the worst case scenario could be fatal. We also advise you to wait until around 3-6 months after you are no longer pregnant to look at having a new piercing.

ANATOMY- Some piercings will be dependent upon the suitability of your anatomy, no one person's anatomy is the same. After a detailed consultation with you about your piercing requests, life-style, and careful consideration of your anatomy, we will determine whether the procedure is likely to be suitable for you.

  • Do I need an appointment?

Yes. We are a private, appointment only studio.

Even if you know that you just want to browse or know what you want to buy you will need an appointment so we can make ourselves available to assist you with your questions or purchase.

For safety we maintain a one to one operator to client ratio to reduce distractions.

Group bookings are not possible and all clients must be unaccompanied for their appointment, unless a support worker/carer is required please email the studio to discuss this in advance.

  • How do I make an appointment?

We have an online booking system for all piercing appointments and consultations.

The booking system will show you the nearest availability for the services you are choosing, and offer you appointments up to 28 days in advance.

There are lots of answers to FAQs here so please be mindful to check if your answer is here before contacting us.

However if you can't find your answer you can email the studio with your requests or inquiries, giving as much information as you can for us to work with and a member of the team will advise you from there.

  • Do I need to pay a booking fee?

Yes. The booking fee is a financial commitment to making your appointment.

The booking fee secures the time we set aside for your procedure and covers some of the costs incurred for us to prepare for your appointment.

The fee covers the cost of our service and includes our plain implant jewellery.

Please note - all booking fees are non-refundable. We will reschedule and honour the booking fee but only where 24 hours notice is given, we advise emailing to notify us of any booking requests. See terms of service for full details.

  • What payment methods are you accepting?

We accept debit, credit, contactless card payments including apple pay, PayPal and/or cash. We can also send digital invoices to those pre-paying for custom jewellery

  • Do you sell gift vouchers

Yes. You can purchase a gift voucher via email or use the booking system to arrange a voucher collection appointment.

We offer both £50 and £100 values.

We will digitally invoice you and email a voucher copy once payment is complete.

We send physical vouchers for free using 2nd class post however if you would like to use a secure post please ask us about the trackable service fee.

Vouchers are valid for 6 months from the date of purchase and are redeemable against all our piercing services and fine jewellery.

  • Do I need to do anything before my appointment?

We advise that you make sure you eat at least 2-4 hours before your appointment to keep your blood sugar levels and energy up.

We will not carry out your procedure if you are intoxicated, so please do not consume alcohol or non-prescription drugs within the 24-48 hours prior to your appointment as this can affect your body's response to the procedure.

You may want to bring a small bottled juice or water. Unfortunately at this time any food, snacks will have to be consumed outside of the premises at this time due to face mask policy so please eat before your appointment.

  • How much is a piercing and what's included in the fee?

Per single piercing the fee starts from £47 for ear and facial piercings, £55 for body piercing and £70+ micro dermal implants. We do offer a small discount for those having multiple piercings in a single session, these prices are all detailed on our booking system at the time of making your booking.

What do you get for the price?

*A short consultation to discuss your ideal placement, anatomical suitability and lifestyle factors that may affect the piercing or healing.

*You will be pierced with our plain, high quality, implant grade jewellery as ••standard, and it is of the highest standard available to us, we proudly source our basic jewellery from world renowned body jewellery companies including Industrial Strength, Neometal and Anatometal. *The colour of our plain implant grade jewellery is a light silvery/grey tone as standard.

*We don't ever touch our jewellery stock without gloves, we steam clean everything immediately before we prepare it for the autoclave sterilisation which happens at your appointment just after we have consulted with you on your jewellery options.

*We wear necessary PPE to reduce the risk of any blood or airborne pathogen contamination during the process.

*We will give you both verbal and offer written aftercare advice and wish you a happy healing journey

••If you want more than the standard plain jewellery and have an extra budget we have luxury bespoke collections available to purchase that can often be used straight away in your fresh piercings. Please ask us at your appointment, if what you have in mind is possible for your fresh piercing.

  • What is luxury jewellery and how much is it?

This is what we specialise in.

Luxury jewellery can be classic and elegant, but also bold and make a statement. No matter what the style, it is made with great care to detail with comfort of the wearer and long-lasting life being at the forefront of importance.

The luxury jewellery that we offer is available in 14k and 18k solid gold alloys. It is mostly handmade or machine cast to the highest standards and sources as responsibly as possible, with some of our jewellers using only recycled gold.

Our collections are priced individually and when undertaking personally curated commissions each piece will be submitted for an estimate from our makers.

Below we will give you some examples of how much you might expect to pay for the specialist quality jewellery we offer in the studio, all our attachments are inclusive of compatible implant grade bars:]

*Starting with a simple 2mm classic round zirconia stone in a 14k gold prong setting you can expect to pay anything from £80 with prices increasing from here with size.

*Our more decorative attachments are valued on average at around £250-£400 with more specialist pieces valued in excess of £400, overall pricing depends greatly on the design and gemstone.

*Classic smooth 14k gold rings can start from £200, and we regularly stock more detailed pieces which are on average around £500-800 with some items often reaching four figures.

We are always happy to get quotes for specific pieces you are interested in so please don't hesitate to email us, there is no obligation to make a purchase but you can also ask us about spreading the cost over 6 months with our lay-away payment plans.

Our jewellery is certified and includes a lifetime guarantee to be free of any manufacturing faults.

  • Can I have luxury jewellery straight away

Yes absolutely, this is what we specialise in!

The reason we stock so many beautiful attachments and ring designs is so we have a wide variety of pieces suitable for various body placements and of course to suit the many styles of our wearers.

One of the main reasons we factor in a little consultation time within your piercing appointment is so we can chat about the beautiful jewellery available for your fresh piercing.

Our luxury collections come in solid gold alloys with rose, white or yellow tones, mostly in 14k but with some 18k and platinum customisable options too.

Where you want to discuss something specific for your new or healed piercing please arrange a consultation so we can go over all the details with you and plan your project.

  • Can you pierce me with jewellery I have worn before but originally bought from you?

No. If we re-processed used jewellery we would contaminate the clean area where we process all new jewellery we use in the studio.

Pre-worn jewellery hosts bodily fluids from the wearer, and this carries a risk of pathogens such as Hepatitis and more, which would further create a serious public health risk to our clients.

We disinfect and sterilise new jewellery that enters the studio through a strict process and guarantee that each new piercing at Bold and Gold Piercing Art comes with a new piece, that includes any re-piercing, because that still involves a needle and breaking the skin barrier.

  • Can I bring my own jewellery for you to use?

No. We will not use jewellery that we have not sourced ourselves because we cannot guarantee the safety of the material, the quality of the metal, or whether it has been used previously.

An extension of our piercing and jewellery fitting services includes custom jewellery design and ordering so if you have something specific you are looking for we can help find your perfect piece.

We also work closely with award winning goldsmiths who offer specialist jewellery re-design, for those with old jewellery they’d like to have made into something new.

  • How do I care for my piercing?

Your new piercing has broken the skin barrier and installed an object (your jewellery) through all the layers that your body must now heal around.

You may experience localised pain and swelling, relative sensitivity, a clear fluid discharge, occasionally bruising and bleeding although uncommon is also possible.

You will want to consider your general health and well-being when considering healing a new piercing. We advise you to consider a daily routine which involves being mindful of general self-care.

To help your body heal anything, you should be looking to stay as healthy as possible, keeping yourself hydrated, eating well, getting enough rest/sleep is important. Even your mental well-being, including stress, can affect your body's capacity to heal wounds.

Here we will provide a written version of the aftercare we advise*.

*Standard aftercare while you are healing ALL type of skin piercing:

    *Do NOT touch your piercing.

*Do NOT twist or turn your jewellery.

*Do NOT sleep on or put any pressure on your piercing.

*DO Wash your hands before starting aftercare.

*DO Rinse your piercing using sterile saline solution

*DO Remove any residue gently with saline soaked kitchen roll OR a saline soaked cotton bud.

*DO Dry the skin around the piercing using a paper towel or kitchen roll

*DO Visit in 6-8 weeks for a piercing well-being check up and potential downsize.

*In addition to the standard aftercare; while you are healing BODY placements:

*Do NOT submerge your piercing under water for at least the first 6 weeks (this includes bathing at home, swimming in pools, using hot tubs etc)

*Avoid any topical skin treatments such as spray tanning for at least the first 6 weeks.

*Microdermals should be covered for the first 10 days both overnight and during showers.

    * In addition to the standard aftercare; while healing ORAL placements:

*Maintain good oral hygiene twice daily.

*Use drinking water to rinse the area after meals.

*Do NOT participate in oral and/or intimate oral contact for the first 6 weeks.

*Avoid smoking and alcohol for the first 6 weeks.

  • What if I have a piercing problem?

We ask that we be your first point of contact in any case of concern for your piercing during any stage of healing.

You can call or email and let us know in as much detail as possible the problems you are experiencing; we will aim to provide advice and work towards a solution, on occasion our advice may involve you making an appointment to visit the studio so we can further inspect the area.

An example of some issues that may come up which we can usually troubleshoot virtually include: jewellery sizing and fitting, advice with lumps/bumps, general irritation which may be caused by external factors, and embedding (often caused by irritation/swelling).

Although most issues are irritations rather than infection that can be worked out with us infections can be serious and lead to dangerous health complications.

If you are experiencing the following extreme symptoms such as heat, redness extending from the piercing site, excessive swelling, ‘puss’/yellow/green fluid, nausea, severe pain and fever please seek emergency medical assistance, you can call 111.

  • How can I buy your jewellery?

We do not have an online store so most of our sales are carried out directly from the studio.

If you can visit the studio a consultation appointment will allow time for you to visit a member of our team who can show you what we have available in our current collections and assist you with a purchase, please note consultation/purchase appointments do not allow time for fitting jewellery.

If you know you would like us to fit your new jewellery for you we offer a styling and fitting service which you can book, we include a consultation service within this appointment.

If you would like to inquire about purchasing something you have seen on our social media or have seen something from one of the companies we stock please send us an email with a screen shot of the item(s), include your specifics eg. gold colour you want, stone colour and any sizing requirements, also we will need measurements for all ring requests (if you don't know your sizing you will need to visit us to have measurements taken or email for advice.

If we have your jewellery requested in store, we will give you the details on the piece.

Where items are still available we can send you a digital invoice to pop them on lay-away (see faq on payment plans) or you can pay in full and make a booking for fitting/piercing or arrange a free door collection via the booking system.

If we do not have your item requested in store we will contact the makers and get in touch with you with details of how you can custom order.

  • Do you offer a payment plan?

Yes. Although we do not offer credit, we can offer our jewellery on lay-away with the total cost equalling jewellery cost plus 10% lay-away fee.

We require a 20% prepayment on the total cost of the item(s) you would like put on lay-away and we can hold it for upto 6 months before the balance is due.

Lay-away jewellery is held by the studio until the balance is complete, we give a maximum of 6 months for this but of course you can complete payment before the balance is due and arrange to have your jewellery fitted/used for a piercing sooner.

For custom orders the same 6 months is given to complete the balance, however a 50% prepayment is required on making orders if we do not have what you want in store.

Please email us via the link on the piercing section if you would like more information on reserving or custom ordered specific jewellery.

  • How do I care for my jewellery?

Your jewellery will need to be cared for regularly even after your piercing is healed.

Once in a while you may notice a build up of residue/film over your jewellery which can make your stones or metal look dull, the most gentle method of cleaning is to use soapy water with a soft dental brush to remove debris.

If you have bought a gemstone which requires special care we will advise you on this during consultation.

  • What is the returns policy for jewellery?

All jewellery purchases are final, strictly non-returnable and non-exchangeable.

The integrity of all jewellery sold by the studio is guaranteed to be free from manufacturing faults for life.

In the event an item of jewellery has experienced breakage, the client may arrange to return the jewellery to the studio for inspection and potential replacement or repair.

If the jewellery is damaged as a result of a manufacturing fault there will be no charge to the client for replacement or repair where possible, the client may however, be liable for any shipping fees in this circumstance.

Lifetime guarantee does not cover jewellery lost, stolen or damaged through mishandling. If on inspection an item has been damaged as a result of mishandling the jewellery manufacturer may still be able to repair or replace the item for a charge.

Replacement or repair can take up to 16 weeks.

You may be required to provide proof of age with valid photo I.D.

  • What is your accessibility for wheelchair users or people with impaired mobility?

We are a street level studio and we have no stairs to contend with only a slight ridge on the threshold. Our main door is 100cm wide, it does open out onto the street so you will need to stay back while we open the door to give you access.

We are a small open plan studio and would ask that if you do have a mobility aid please contact us in advance so we can ensure to make the space as easily accessible and comfortable for you.

We are able to adapt our procedure with you seated for some placements however some will require specific body positioning in order for us to tattoo the area, we will discuss this with you prior to your booking.

The treatment bed has adjustable height starting at 24inches from the floor and can reach 31inches from the floor and can accommodate bodies weighing up to 400 lbs.

We ask all persons entering the studio to leave their judgements outside as this is a safe space for everyone to creatively express themselves aesthetically through body art.

We will not accept any form of abuse, if you display this you will be asked to leave and if you do not comply we will call the local authorities, you may be charged and will be permanently excluded from visiting in the future.

  • Do I need an appointment?

Yes. At this time we are only working by appointment; due to spread risks of the Covid pandemic we are restricting the number of people in the studio at any one time.

We will maintain a strict one to one operator to client ratio and allow adequate time for our extended disinfecting procedures between all clients.

For this reason we ask each person makes an individual appointment for themselves as group bookings are not possible and all clients must be unaccompanied for their appointment, unless a support worker/carer is required please call the studio to discuss this in advance.

  • How do I make an appointment?

You can email the studio with your requests or inquires, giving as much information as you can for us to work with and a member of the team will advise you from there.

Our tattoo artists may be able to help you online through their own social media platforms if you have a specific enquiry for one of them.

  • Do I need to pay a booking fee?

Yes. The booking fee is a financial commitment to making your appointment.

The booking fee secures the time we set aside for your procedure and covers some of the costs incurred for us to prepare for your appointment.

Please note - all booking fees are non-refundable. See terms of service at the foot of the page for full details.

  • What payment methods are you accepting?

Our tattoo artists accept cash and can also take PayPal payments.

  • Do I need to do anything before my appointment?

We advise that you make sure you eat at least 2-4 hours before your appointment to keep your blood sugar levels and energy up.

Until further notice we will need you to wear a mask to your appointment and keep it on for the duration of your visit, there will be no exceptions.

If you cannot wear a mask please wait until they are not mandatory before making an appointment.

Please bring minimal personal belongings with you to your appointment, just the essentials.

You may want to bring a small bottled juice or water. Unfortunately at this time any food, snacks will have to be consumed outside of the premises at this time due to face mask policy so please eat before your appointment.

  • How much is a tattoo?

Tattoo pricing can vary and will depend on lots of things including the artist doing the work, the design specifics, the placement and the overall size of the piece.

Our artists offer consultations to discuss your design specifics and can estimate the price once they have spoken with you.

  • How painful is the tattoo procedure?

You may experience some discomfort during your tattoo procedure.

The level of discomfort can vary between people and also with body placement, but overall most people will say the discomfort is manageable, after all there are more people who come back for more than not.

If you are very anxious about the pain factor, there are topical skin numbing creams available from most pharmacies that you may research for use.

  • What can I expect after a new tattoo?

A tattoo involves breaking the barrier of the skin, this can cause sensitivity, redness, pain, localised swelling, bruising, bleeding and you will most likely have fluid discharge over the first day or so of healing.

The skin will begin forming new barrier over the pigment during the first two weeks of healing, this may cause the skin to become shiny, and very itchy but it is important you do not scratch and do not pick any dry areas that appear, this is where your aftercare is important.

Throughout the healing process your skin will be at risk of infection if you do not follow aftercare* procedures, you must keep the area clean, dry and use appropriate skin healing cream/balm where necessary.

  • How do I care for my tattoo?

Your artist will go over an in-depth verbal instruction with you after your tattoo, and advise on specific skin healing products you may use, but here we will provide a simple version of the aftercare*.

*You must keep the barrier film over the tattoo for a minimum of 4 hours, when you remove this you will need clean running water and preferably an anti-bacterial soap to wash the area.

*Lather the soap up so to remove all residue and rinse thoroughly.

*Pat the area dry (do not rub) with a clean towel or paper towel (not tissue paper). *Apply your aftercare cream/balm where advised by your artist and repeat this cleaning process at least twice per day.

*Do not submerge your new tattoo under water, avoid extreme heat, any topical skin treatments and protect your tattoo from dusty/dirty environments for the first 6 weeks while the area is open to infection and during the development of new skin: This includes baths, swimming pools, sea water, sauna, steam room, hot tubs, extreme heat from natural sunlight, sunbeds, tanning products, perfumed creams/sprays, dirty/dusty work places such as building sites.

  • What if I have a problem healing my tattoo?

There is always a risk, when breaking the skin barrier, that you may experience extreme or adverse reactions.

If you are worried about the progress of your healing, we advise that you contact the studio at the earliest signs of any complication or in the instance you are unsure of something.

We will be able to arrange a check-up where necessary for the artist to inspect the tattoo and may give you additional advice on what actions to take moving forward.

In very extreme circumstances where your artist is concerned that you may have signs of infection or allergic reaction, this is out of their scope of practice to give medical advice and you should proceed to get medical assistance from your local GP or NHS emergency service.

Around 3 weeks into healing you should start to see what the healed tattoo will settle like, although the colours and clarity may still change over the following weeks, if there are any areas missing you should contact the studio and your artist no more than 4 weeks after the original tattoo appointment to have the work inspected by your artist.

A free re-touch may be offered where there are no signs of negligence and you have contacted the studio within 4 weeks of your tattoo procedure, if there are signs that your tattoo has not been properly cared for as instructed (ie. Evidence dry healing areas have been picked off) you will be liable to pay for any further correctional work.

  • Are there any reasons I might not be suitable for a tattoo procedure?

Your medical health is crucial when it comes to receiving and healing any skin procedures which can leave you susceptible to infection.

For this reason, we have a confidential, detailed release form which you must complete before your procedure asking you for any information regarding medical conditions you have/treatments you have undergone or are currently receiving which may affect your ability to receive a tattoo, or affect the ability of your body to heal the procedure.

  • Where can I get more information?

If your question is not covered anywhere here you can head to the tattoo section of the website and read the terms of service or use the email icon on the tattoo section to send your questions.
